Mystery Houses Near The Eastland-Callahan County Line

The Key-Stone Roofed House on Cooper Creek My uncle, Milton Dunaway, called my attention to the cellarlike stone structure on Cooper Creek in 1971. He had noticed it while drilling an oil well nearby. I immediately became curious about the age of the structure and who built it. One of the more interesting interviews I conducted at that time was with Mrs. Sam Jobe who had moved to a site near the structure in 1886 when she was a fourteenyear- old girl. She said, “No one knew who had built it then, and it looked old at that time (Interview, August 16, 1971).” Mrs. Jobe was 97. I find 50 years later that I still do not have all the answers about the rock house.
