Area Sports Memories

A few weeks ago, I read an article in Eastland County Today about two young men receiving scholarships to play college football. It stated that they were the first ever Rising Star Wildcat players to have this opportunity. In the following weeks I expected to read that someone from Rising Star would refute this statement. Then I read that a third player was being added to this list. I decided to call the editor and ask him if this information had been contested. He informed me that it had not. I then told him about the greatest year in Wildcat football history. The 1949 team was awesome. They won 12 games, most of them by wide margins. They dominated Rule for the region championship which was as far as class B went in those days. The young men who played on that team had accumulated 27 consecutive victories from 47 through 49. They also won the state track championship in 1950. The winning streak was confirmed as a record in current UIL documents. About four years ago I remember reading that Rising Star football was going to the playoffs for the first time since 1949. This accomplishment was realized by switching to six-man football. Checking with the High School Principal and Superintendent I was told that the intent of the first scholarship recipients’ statement was to reflect only this portion of history. They hoped to influence other young men who played sixman football and want to keep playing, Opportunities are out there. I was told a player from Gordon played for Princeton a few years ago. I also remember a guy named Jack Pardee, who played 6-man at Cristobal, then at Texas A&M and then followed with a long NFL playing and coaching career.
