Come and enjoy – Ven y disfruta de la cominda The Friendship Meal will be this coming Tuesday, April 21st, 2026.

The menu for April… A Mexican dinner washed down with tea donated by Dairy Queen in Cisco and then our drawing for gift baskets put together by Wild Flower Florist in Cisco. .

Join us from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at The Holy Rosary Catholic Church Hall, on the corner of 11th & F. Because of a kind donation from Cisco Strong, this coming year’s meals will be thanks to their generosity.

The meal is a food ministry project, run by parishioners of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. It’s a home cooked meal and anyone from any community is invited for food and fellowship. We encourage families and individuals to attend. So, bring friends, strangers and of course, yourself. We know our guests come for the cooking, but they stay for socializing and drawing. The only requirement is an appetite.

Hey, if you just don’t feel like cooking or you want to meet up with friends for a meal, whatever the reason, come and join us. Next month’s meal, the first Tuesday of May, the 5th, we are at the First Baptist Church in Eastland at the corner of Lamar and Valley, 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. May’s dinner, baked chicken, rice pilaf and other stuff. If you have any questions, please call Pete Loftin at 254-595-2303.

Rendezvous With Writing

The Writer’s Attention Span

My attention span has shrunk the past couple of years. I started to notice it when working on twisty plot problems and when reading difficult books. Apparently, I’m not alone. Johann Hari wrote a whole book about our shrinking attention spans. In Stolen Focus (Crown, 2022), Hari explains that short form content (like TikTok videos and X posts), social media in general, and ease of content (you don’t exercise your concentration if something’s too easy) have robbed us of our ability to think deeply and for long periods of time.

Additionally, Hari says our busy lives mean a lack of downtime to simply daydream. Daydreaming, ironically, helps strengthen the brain so it can focus more deeply when it is

working. Hari also says easier communication tasks (think: AI-written emails, informational videos, and such) mean we aren’t training our brains to engage in deep work. Dr. Cal Newport, an expert on deep thinking and the author of Deep Work (Little Brown, 2013), explains that we need tasks which are interesting and slightly hard; AI prompting doesn’t cut it, and neither does passively watching videos.

I decided to increase my attention span, or at least try to, and improve my ability to think more deeply. Two months ago, I turned my phone to grayscale to make it less attractive. I made sure I always had scrap paper next to me as I work so I could jot down and store random to-do’s (add bread to the grocery list), allowing me to continue with the main task at hand. I resolved to do one thing at a time so my attention wouldn’t be divided. I would draft more stories longhand instead of sitting in front of a computer screen. I unsubbed from virtually all YouTube channels, turned off Facebook notifications, and deleted my Instagram and X accounts. I decided to strengthen my foundation of literature: classics, Scripture, and more difficult contemporary fiction. I vowed to take breaks that don’t include a screen. I aimed to explore other analytical modes like history and science and philosophy.

Have I seen a difference? That first week I was fidgety and unable to do much. I think I was in typical digital-detox mode. After that, yes, I did notice a difference. I’m now able to read challenging books for longer periods of time. My vocabulary is improving. I can write more words and spend more time wrangling plot conundrums before I need a break.

I wonder what prolific author Nancy Robinson Masters does to protect her attention span. Masters will be the speaker at the May meeting of the Cisco Writers Club. Besides being an author, she is a pilot and known for encouraging others on their writing journeys. Come join us at 7 PM on May 7th at the Hilton Room classroom inside the Myrtle Wilks Community Center. Visitors are welcome!

Priscilla Bettis is secretary of the Cisco Writers Club. She is drafting a novella set in Alaska.

As part of Ranger College’s Alumni Weekend, alumna Jennifer Neville Maddle will give a presentation and discussion of her latest book, Marston House, at 2:00 pm Saturday Feb. 28, at Goleman Library on the Ranger College campus. The public is invited to attend.

The presentation will be followed by a book signing at 3:00 pm.

Marston House is the story of a house that was well known in Ranger before it was demolished in April 2025. The book is billed as “part memoir, part story.” It explores the lives of longtime Ranger residents and business owners Hall Walker, Azaline Pulley, and Audrey Yonker, and their connections to the house on Marston Street, attempting to answer the questions, “Why was the house never sold?” and “Who was the only woman Hall Walker ever truly loved?”

Marston House was built in 1915 in its original location north of Ranger on the Walker ranch, before being moved into town in 1937. The property was also the site of one of Rang- er’s first producing oil wells, The Nannie Walker, named for Hall Walker’s mother, Nancy “Nannie” Walker. The house remained mysteriously vacant from about 1980 until its demolition in 2025. Over the years many Ranger residents reportedly attempted to purchase the house, but all offers were refused. The legend circulated that according to Hall Walker, the house was never to be sold because “the only woman he ever truly loved had lived there and he’d rather see it crumble and fall to the ground than have another person live in it.”

Maddle, a longtime resident of Ranger herself, graduated from Ranger College in 1988. She taught English at Ranger High School from 1991 until her retirement in 2021, when she began writing for publication.

Maddle wrote Marston House from February to October 2025, after researching the

October of 2000 when she was first

people and incidents involved since made aware of the local legend surrounding the house.

According to Maddle, “Marston House spans well over a century, and was 25 years in the making, but it is a

story that is finally ready to be told.”

Author Jennifer Neville Maddle, above, presents “Marston House”, her latest book:

The Nursing Program at Cisco College is so much on the “cutting edge” of nursing training that the program’s Dean and Director were recently invited to speak to the Texas Board of Nursing about the program’s innovations.

Dr. Pearl Merritt, Dean of the college’s School of Nursing for 13 years, and Dr. Spencer Woody, Director of Nursing for the past two years, journeyed to Austin to describe recent developments at Cisco College before the 13-member board, appointed by the Texas governor, that is responsible for nursing school accreditation in Texas.

Chief among the innovations the Cisco College officials presented is the introduction of nursing courses into the Dual Credit programs in the high schools.

A high school student can become a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) in one year, even before graduating from high school.

“The great thing about it, then, they go one more year to get the Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), and when they take their state board exams, they are an RN,” Dean Merritt said.

The first Dual Credit program for nursing was conducted recently through the college’s partnership with Holland High School in Abilene.

The first three graduates had a 100 percent pass rate on the state exams.

Cisco College is now working on a plan to offer a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing at the college, which would require an additional two semesters of school beyond the ADN degree.

Target date to begin that new program is January 2027.

Dean Merritt pointed out that the State of Texas is projecting that by 2032, the state will have a shortage of 57,000 nurses.

Merritt said one reason is that when nurses who are nearing retirement were growing up, young women often had limited career opportunities; they could become a nurse or a teacher. Now these older nurses are retiring, but young women have much broader career choices now, and this contributes to the shortfall of nurses.

Cisco College’s LVN program begins three times a year, in January, May and August. The next level, the ADN program (associate’s degree nursing leading to an RN degree upon passing the state exams), begins every August and January.

The first step to entering Nursing School at Cisco College is to contact a health counselor at the college, either in person, or by calling or emailing, Merritt said, and then fill out a college application.

Dean Merritt attributes the success rate of the nursing program to “our faculty. We have the best faculty.” She praised Director Woody who has put together a team of six LVN faculty and four ADN faculty. “She’s brought new ideas, but also resources,” Merritt said.

Woody graduated from all of Cisco College’s nursing programs before receiving her master’s and doctorate degrees from Grand Canyon University. Dean 52

Merritt took her nursing prerequisites from Cisco College before earning two master’s degrees from Abilene Christian University and a doctorate from Texas Tech.

“Both of us were LVNs, and so that’s why we’re really passionate about making sure our students have the opportunity because they can start as an LVN, which we did, and work your way through school,” Merritt said. “We serve the underserved here.”

Why should a student choose nursing? “It’s a passion. It’s not a job,” Woody said. “You don’t come here just to go to work. You have to be passionate about taking care of other people and serving other people.

And I think, along with that passion, it provides so many opportunities.

It’s life-changing. When they go to school here, we tell the students, give it your all for that year or two years because it’s going to totally change your life and your family’s life.”

Merritt said, “One of the questions they asked us at the board that kind of stuck with me was, how many of these students are first-generation college students? And they all are. So we really like to focus on those students.

We both have a heart and a passion for them.”

In addition to LVN and ADN programs, Cisco offers a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA course and an 8-week Certified Nurses Aides (CNA) course. The CMA can work in the prison or nursing homes to give medications. The CNAs work in nursing homes and hospitals to provide direct patient care.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Calm & Co.

Rendezvous With Writing

by Priscilla Bettis https://x.com/ PriscillaBettis

Every talented author I’ve ever met is a deep thinker. They take an experience in life and reflect on it by talking it over with others, writing about it in journals, or drawing the scene. The inevitable questions arise: Why me? Why did God let this happen? Those questions point to negative events, but it could also be a reflection of a positive event: What’s the best use of this unexpected windfall?

As reflections are organized in the brain, story emerges.

Because A happened, B then happened.

Events are labeled with emotion. Characters and settings take their places. This is the heart of that adage, Write what you know. The result is an anecdote, a short story, or a novel like

Chouette by Claire Oshetsky. Oshetsky’s real-life daughter was an unusual child, and Chouette is the fictionalized story of

Oshetsky as a mother of a profoundly misunderstood child.

Or consider The Weight of Snow and Regret by Elizabeth Gauffreau. Sheldon Poor Farm in Sheldon, Vermont, used to house the mentally ill and the destitute. Gauffreau grew up in Sheldon, and the historic institution haunted her childhood. The Weight of Snow and Regret fictionalizes the events surrounding the poor farm.

On the poetry side, G.P. Hype wrote his collection A Gracious Month as daily reflections which he manipulated from lines of thought into lines of verse. Each poem is a mini-story.

Reflections on life experiences can inspire song lyrics, too. As Bob Spitz explains in his book The Beatles: The Biography , reflections on the death of Paul McCartney’s mother, named Mary, and a later dream about her inspired McCartney’s lyrics for “Let It Be” (Spitz 2012, p. 88).

At the next meeting of the Cisco Writers Club, songwriter Jerry McCoy will speak about what inspires his lyrics. We’ll meet in the Hilton Room classroom inside the Myrtle Wilks Community Center, at 7 p.m., on Thursday, March 5th. Visitors are always welcome; come join us!

Priscilla Bettis is secretary of the Cisco Writers Club. She is the author of Whispers of a Southern Moon, a short story and poetry collection with several of the stories written after reflecting on real-life events.

Goodreads

Cisco, Texas – [January 22, 2026] – Cisco College has been awarded a Humanities Texas rural grant for $2,500.00 for Revitalizing the Spider Rock Exhibit. Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, supports this program.

The Revitalizing the Spider Rock Exhibit program will enhance community engagement and education by temporarily relocating the artifacts from the Lela Latch Lloyd Museum to Cisco College and revitalizing the historical artifacts and narratives surrounding the Spider Rock Mystery.

John Caraway, Cisco College Professor of History and Political Science will lead the project. Staci Shupe, Professor of Government and History, and Jodi Frizzell, Art Professor and Department Chair, will join Caraway on this project.

“The significance of the Spider Rock extends beyond its intriguing legends,” said Caraway. “It serves as a vital link to our region's cultural heritage, illustrating the intersection of history, folklore, and the humanities.”

This initiative will involve students in the 52 curation process, allowing them to explore local history while developing critical skills in research, teamwork, and public presentation. The program will culminate in a public exhibition opening, coinciding with the end of spring graduation, where students will showcase their work and share the significance of the Spider Rock within the community. By fostering collaboration between students, faculty, and residents, this project seeks to create a dynamic learning environment that celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Cisco and inspires future generations to appreciate their local history.

More information about Spider Rock is available at lubbockonline.com/story/ news/ 2018/ 02/ 18/ no-title/14358043007/.

Spider Rock

Stone Map
