Our beloved matriarch, Dessie, also known as wife, mom, Mamaw, sister, Aunt Dessie, Miss Dessie and faithful friend graduated peacefully from this life into her eternal life on May 6, 2026. Her 98 years of footsteps on this earth were marked by accomplishments too vast to enumerate herein, but her greatest boasts were twofold --- that of her steadfast faith in Jesus Christ and the love she had for her treasured family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. And if ever she had extra time on her hands after reading and studying her bible, or talking to her grandchildren when she could get them on the phone, she would likely be studying the latest hairstyles and/ or color techniques in the world of hairdressing. After all, as she would frequently say "well I was a hairdresser for 70 years and after that time, it just stays in your blood." Her favorite motto about hair still resonates in the memories of many "if your hair isn't becoming to you, you should "be coming" to us to help you correct it." True to her quick wit and sense of humor, she often teased the women in her family with comments such as "who cut your hair?" or "how long has it been since you were at the hairdresser?" Or her favorite "Oh how I wish I could show that hairdresser on TV how to hold the scissors at the right angle".

Dessie was born the third child in a lineup of twelve, and because of that privileged place in the birth order, she along with her younger sister Frances, assumed the role of tending to the subsequent eight siblings born over time. She was so attentive and loving that many of them grew up calling her "momma", a term that always made her smile with joy. Perhaps one of the reasons her home was always a gathering place for all to congregate and enjoy a home cooked meal around her kitchen table was because she was so accustomed to cooking for a clan of hungry mouths throughout the years.

Dessie's sense of humor defined her. Everyone who has visited her and "sat a while" will relate to the head tossed back in a bellywash laugh about something entertaining shared among friends. It could be a comment she recounted from the mouth of one of her precious grandchildren, or a joke she wanted to share. She loved to laugh. And she wanted others to laugh too. It seemed to work because when she walked into a room, the first reaction that others had was always to smile big and bold! She always claimed that it was far easier and healthier to make your face smile than to pucker it up in a frown.

No one who knocked on Dessie's door was turned away. She was a woman of exceptional compassion who literally could not tolerate seeing one in need. Whether it was hunger, financial depravity, emotional turmoil, career crisis, or even puppies abandoned under basements, she was there with a helping hand, a dollar to spare, wise counsel to disperse (whether they wanted to hear it or not). At times we all wondered if there was some neon blinking light on her front porch that flashed "all are welcome here" that brought the multitudes. However, the reality is that this was just Dessie – her heart for others, her deep desire that needs be met, her fight for justice in an unjust world. To her last breath she ministered and encouraged others to the sacrifice of her own needs.

Life was full from start to finish. There were siblings to steer in the right path, marriage and children of her own to raise and provide for, hair salons to manage, cosme-tology students to train, grandchildren and great grandchildren to love and shepherd, quilting and sewing gatherings to master, beans and peas to can, and above all else, her beloved bible studies with her pastor's wife each week. She absolutely thrived on the Word of God and the hope it provided. She would often comment "how in this world does anyone survive without the grounding that God's Word brings?' She would often be found praying in her apartment, or praying at night with her sweet husband of 60 years as they fell asleep. She would often boldly ask "how can I pray for you?' Mom prayed constantly for everyone else, and reserved a special set of prayers for herself. They were simple but significant to her and she asked God every day in recent years to bless her if it was His will. She would often say "but I do recognize that His ways are not my ways, His thoughts are not my thoughts", followed by "but I'm gonna keep asking." Today those prayers have been answered.

*Lord, make my life worthy to your glory; (an amazing testimony to a life of faith) *Lord, preserve my mental ability and memory; (sharp and focused to the end) *Lord, give me the strength to be able to walk on my own, with no wheelchair needed; (last steps were with a walker the day prior to passing) *Lord, when it is time to take me home, hit the gas pedal. Let's not delay!! (He heard you mom) Well done good and faithful daughter of the King. Your prayers have been answered today. Your 98 years on this earth will be marked by a legacy that you have asked the Lord to instill in your children and grandchildren – we will carry your legacy forward – to God be the glory.

Dessie is survived by her husband of 60 years, Clifton; her daughter and son-in-law Sharon and Don Castle, her younger brother Bill Hammer and wife Kathy of Pampa, sister-in-law Nancy Hammer of Bowie, younger sister Glenda Jessup and husband Claud of Cisco, stepson Bryan (Tammie) of Wichita Falls, 4 grandchildren (Stephanie, Truitt, Britani (Brandon), Troy (Caroline), 8 great grandchildren (Corbin, Payslei, Cade, Edyn, Kane, Cooper, Harper and Parker), along with over 140 nieces and nephews.

She is now reunited in heaven with her beloved son and daughter-in-law Randy and Linda Gattis, her parents William Jess and Jessie Hammer, her 2 sisters and 7 brothers, stepson Monte Covington, along with many other extended family members.

Services were held Saturday May 9 at Kimbrough-Jacobs Funeral Home.

And if ever she had extra time on her hands after reading and studying her bible, or talking to her grandchildren when she could get them on the phone, she would likely be studying the latest hairstyles and/or color techniques in the world of hairdressing. After all, as she would frequently say “well I was a hairdresser for 70 years and after that time, it just stays in your blood.” Her favorite motto about hair still resonates in the memories of many “if your hair isn’t becoming to you, you should “be coming” to us to help you correct it.” True to her quick wit and sense of humor, she often teased the women in her family with comments such as “who cut your hair?” or “how long has it been since you were at the hairdresser?” Or her favorite “Oh how I wish I could show that hairdresser on TV how to hold the scissors at the right angle”. Dessie was born the third child in a lineup of twelve, and because of that privileged place in the birth order, she along with her younger sister Frances, assumed the role of tending to the subsequent eight siblings born over time. She was so attentive and loving that many of them grew up calling her “momma”, a term that always made her smile with joy.

Rodney Don Spruill, 63, was born on March 17, 1963, at the Gorman Blackwell Hospital to Truett Sherrod Spruill and Patsy Morris Spruill. On April 14, 2026, Rodney was welcomed into the arms of Jesus, fully healed and made whole.

When Rodney was around five years old, his family noticed something unique—he could walk straight down the hallway at night, but during the day he bounced from wall to wall. A visit to the eye doctor soon followed, and Rodney proudly received his first pair of eyeglasses. It was one of many moments that revealed his resilience and joyful spirit.

Rodney was a sweet, loving, and deeply caring soul who never met a stranger. He gave BIG HUGS, the kind that wrapped you in warmth and made you feel seen and loved. His tender heart extended even to the animals on the family farm. He formed a special bond with one of the Jersey cows he tended, visiting her daily to offer hugs, kisses, and back scratches. Rodney loved openly, fully, and without hesitation—and he loved everyone.

Throughout his life, Rodney worked faithfully and joyfully. He washed dishes at the Carbon School for 13 years, worked on a cleaning service in Stephenville, and helped his parents and brothers with countless tasks on the family farm in Carbon, Texas.

At 14 years old, Rodney accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at the First Baptist Church in Carbon. His faith became the foundation of his life. He loved reading the Bible and spent years copying it word for word into notebooks—filling them with scripture written in his own hand. Gospel music was always close by, and he often hummed a tune as he went about his day. One of his favorite songs was “I’ll Fly Away,” which he joyfully sang as a church special alongside Pastor Donny Ray.

Rodney is survived by his mother, Patsy Spruill; his father Truett and wife Lila Spruill; his brothers Rex Shannon and Vickilea Spruill, and Russell Dean Spruill. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Shandi Shanks (Michelle), Kelsie Jirasek, Laramy Spruill (Amanda), Zachary Spruill (Kate), Chisholm Spruill (Mercades), Blatiney Velez (Rolando), Sierra Perrin (Cody), Grandle Thompson (Morgan), Lea Kay Brown (Ethan), and Hope Spruill Smith. Great-nieces and great-nephews include Kendall Shanks; Serenity and Keston Jirasek; Carson, Brayden, Madison, and Chrissy Spruill; Coby, Jeffrey, Anna, Rylea Jo, and Tucker Spruill; Nevaeh, Briseis, Truett, and Wyatt Spruill; Gavin, Olivia, and Adalynn Velez; Octavia and Sophia Perrin; Reese and Griffin Thompson; Eli, Lilly, and Chloe Ryan Brown; and Samantha and Abigail Smith.

Rodney was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Ruby and Emory “Slim” Morris; paternal grandparents Pearl and James “Cotton” Spruill; and great-niece Penelope Rose Spruill.

Rodney Don was a special gift to all who knew him. His smile, his hugs, his faith, and his gentle spirit left a mark on every heart he touched. Though he will be greatly missed, we rejoice knowing he is now fully healed in the presence of his precious Lord and Savior.

The family would like to thank Avir at Woodlands for their excellent care during Rodney’s stay. We would also like to thank Solaris Hospice for the deep attention given to his comfort and care. A special thanks to the Mehaffey’s for their assistance with his medical travels. Your kindness and support will always be remembered.

Pallbearers are Laramy Spruill, Zachary Spruill, Chisholm Spruill, Grandle Thompson

Rolando Velez, Cody Perrin and Honorary Pallbearer, Ethan Brown.

Visitation service for Rodeny will be held Thursday, April 16, 2026, from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Edwards Funeral Home – Eastland.

A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, April 17, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Oliver Springs Cemetery in Comanche County, Texas, officiated by Pastor, Chris Justice.

He grew up in Munday, Texas and completed eighth grade before quitting school to work and help his family. He particularly enjoyed working as a flagger for a crop-dusting company as a teenager, as well as working for his brothers at their ESSO service station in Knox City. He later went to work for Automation Industries and began a career as a machinist that spanned approximately 45 years, working through the changeover to Rockwell International, General Dynamics and Lockheed. He was proud of his work as lead man on the F-16 project. Although it was difficult to get away in later years, he loved road trips with his wife.

He loved his grandchildren.

With immense gratitude we thank God for the life of John Charles Anders, R. Ph. More importantly, we thank Him for the everlasting life that is now at hand for John. By His goodness and grace, John was able to defeat pancreatic cancer on March 22, 2026, and entered Heaven where his faith is now sight.

John was born October 5, 1947, in Schulenburg, Texas to Charles J. and Leona A. Anders. John graduated from Weimar High School in 1966. He then attended Texas A&M University where he was recruited by Coach Gene Stallings to play football for the Aggies. He played there in 1967 and 1968, with his favorite memory being when Mo Moorman hit him so hard in a shotgun alley drill that it split his helmet off his head, leaving a headache that lasted for weeks and a special memory that lasted a lifetime. He later transferred to the University of Southern Louisiana where he played football as a Rajun Cajun for two seasons. After his college football career ended, he enrolled in the College of Pharmacy at The University of Houston where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in May of 1972.

John married Sharon Summers March 9,1974, in San Antonio. They had their first son, Bryan, in 1975 and later Todd, in 1977. They raised their family in Schulenburg, always staying busy with their business, their sons’ activities, and community involvement. John served on many service boards throughout his life and always dedicated his time to his community.

He was employed by Sommer’s Rexall Drug Stores for over a decade where he managed prescription departments for two large chain operations. He then spent several years as the Director of Pharmacy for many rural hospitals including Eagle Lake, Columbus, and Weimar, Texas. He was involved in intense unit dose and I.V. admixture programs for inpatients for Innovative Pharmacy Services. In 1984, John joined the Apothecary Medical Associates of Schulenburg as their Managing Pharmacist for over ten plus years.

Finally, his longtime dream was realized when he was able to purchase his first pharmacy, Zatopek’s Pharmacy, in Weimar, Texas in 1994. In 1997, he expanded his business to include Farmer’s Drug and formed Community Pharmacy. After many years of dedication in service of others, he sold Community Pharmacy and “retired” in 2004. He was a patient and thorough pharmacist, making each customer feel welcomed, heard, and cared for. He truly loved his career and the ability it gave him to help others.

Schulenburg made a wonderful home for their family but in 2013, they built their final home in Par Village, Comanche County, where John could sit on the back porch smoking his pipe and watching the golfers pass by. Never a man of idle hands, John decided full time retirement was not for him. He continued relief pharmacy work in Brownwood, Comanche, and Rising Star up until January of 2026, at the age of 78. He also helped Todd and Angela for many years at the funeral home when needed. He was always willing to lend a hand and a voice of reason. His guidance and advice will be appreciated always. John and Sharon attended East Side Baptist Church in Comanche and loved the many friends they made there.

John was a kind and compassionate man, always asking others how life was treating them and genuinely caring about their answer. He lived a full life with many hobbies. He loved everything Texas A&M and was the most loyal Aggie. Football was his favorite sport to follow, but he kept up with all sports, a deep love he shared with his grandsons. For over forty years, John shared a deer lease outside of Weimar, with several of his lifelong friends. He looked forward to each trip to see his buddies and enjoy his love of hunting. His family was his greatest joy in life. Ballgames, band concerts, hunting, fishing, throwing quarters, chasing his grandsons from one activity to the next, these were all the “good stuff” as John would say. He was a wonderful husband, the best father and father-in-law, a devoted BoBo to his grandchildren, and a gentle and kind soul to all who crossed his path. He was a loyal friend and a caring neighbor. He will be missed deeply by those who knew and loved him.

He leaves behind a loving legacy in his family: his devoted wife of fifty-two years, Sharon; son, Bryan Anders and wife, Lydia, and their children, Chase Townsel, Maddy Hacker, Katie Hacker, Jacob Anders, Ellie Forney, Violet Forney, Gabe Forney, and Maurice Anders; son, Todd Anders and wife, Angela, and their sons, Rhett Charles Anders and Kolt Johnson Anders; sisters, Lana Mead, and Carol Scharnberg and husband, Jack; two nephews, Chuck Mead (Jennifer) and Virgil Mead (Stephanie); two nieces, Lauren Brumley (Matt) and Emily Smith (Brian); four great-nieces; and other extended family including the Johnson family whom he loved dearly. John has been reunited with his parents; parents-in-law, Maurice and Frances Summers; and brothers-in-law, Gary Summers and Howard Mead.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 29, 2026, at De Leon First Baptist Church with Brother Paul Winegeart and Brother Steven Schulte officiating. Private family graveside interment following in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Carbon.

The Anders family would like to thank CCS Hospice for their genuine love and care of John in his final days. He wanted to be home with his family overlooking the golf course and you all made that possible and comfortable for him. We are forever grateful.

If desired, memorial contributions may be directed to First Baptist Church De Leon (125 South Houston Street, De Leon), East Side Baptist (207 Ranch Rd 3381, Comanche), or to the De Leon Sports Alliance (c/o Angela at PO Box 167, De Leon). John loved to follow his grandsons’ sporting endeavors and would love nothing more than to see the DSA organization grow to benefit the local children. John would also tell those kids "Gig 'Em"!

In Loving Memory of Matthew Kendall Brown

November 25, 1980 - March 19, 2026

Matthew Kendall Brown-known to his friends as "Matt" and to his buddies as "Brownie"-passed away on March 19, 2026, at the age of 45 following a motorcycle accident. A man of high energy, sharp wit, and a legendary contagious laugh, Matt lived a life defined by adventure, service, and an unwavering devotion to his three children.

A Life in the Clouds and the Trenches

Born and raised in Eastland, Texas, Matt's career was a testament to his discipline and passion for aviation. He began his journey in the U.S. Navy (2000-2004) at N.A.S. Oceana as an Airman, where he served as a Jet Engine Mechanic for F/A-18C Hornets. His technical expertise transitioned into a storied career as a helicopter pilot. After earning his ratings through Longhorn Helicopters and Pelican-Airways, Matt became an ATP-rated Pilot and CFI/CFII.

He was instrumental in training the next generation of pilots, including members of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the DEA, preparing them for mission-critical flight. Most recently, he served as an Air Medical Pilot for the Texas Children's Hospital North Austin Kangaroo Crew, operated by PHI. In this vital role, Matt's skill and composure helped provide critical care to those in their most vulnerable moments, culminating a distinguished career in which he logged over 2,700 flight hours.

The Ultimate Outdoorsman

On the ground, Matt was a force of nature. He was a skilled outdoorsman who found peace and excitement in the Texas brush, whether he was hunting deer, dove, or hog. He was famously passionate about his BBQ and his "carnivore diet"-a lifestyle his family loved to tease him about almost as much as he loved defending it.

Matt was rarely seen without his favorite Black Rifle Coffee in hand, likely wearing one of the many hats or shirts from their collection. He loved a good debate, a long road trip, and talking to his brother, Jacob, every single day about everything under the sun.

A Legacy of Adventure

Above all, Matt was a father. His greatest joy was taking his children-Kendall (13), Everly (11), and Asher (5)-on adventures, teaching them to fish, camp, and explore the world with the same curiosity he possessed. He was the life of every party and the heart of his family.

Matt is survived by his children, Kendall and Everly Brown of Noblesville, Indiana, and Asher Brown of Houston; father, Bobby Brown, of Eastland and mother, Sharon "Katie" Bradshaw (Buddy), of Eastland; brother, Jacob Brown, of Broaddus; his sisters, Kasey Whitten (Tyler), of Flower Mound and Candace Villalba (Zachary) of Lewisville; his nieces and nephews Claira (Logan), Carter, Emery, Fisher, Castin, Micah, Benjamin, Natalie, Luca, Nora, and soon to arrive Amelia; and great-niece Blaire.

Matt was preceded in death by grandparents, Sid and Velma Brown, of Eastland, and Robert Brown and Hazel Kinder of Alabama.

"To fly is to see the world through a different lens; to father is to leave a light for the world to follow."

Funeral Services for Matthew will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at 2:00PM at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel, 411 S. Mulberry St., Eastland, TX 76448 officiated by Dean Brown. Interment will follow at Alameda Cemetery in Eastland County, TX. A time of visitation will be held one hour prior to the service starting at 1:00PM.

Flowers may be sent to the funeral home at the address above or you can place an order with a local florist here: https://www.edwardsfh.com/send-flowers.

Memorial Celebration, immediately following the funeral service.

Freedom Fellowship Church, 613 W.
