WITEMEYER: I write historical Christian romance set in Texas in the late 1800s. My books feature feisty heroines, swoony Texas heroes, and action-packed adventure with a generous dash of humor. DAY: Sounds great. What makes a story humorous?

WITEMEYER: Humor is multifaceted and very subjective, so what I think makes a story humorous might not be what someone else finds humorous. However, my favorite way to incorporate humor is through narrative voice. If the character’s narrative is written from the point of view of someone who has a humorous voice (self-deprecating, sarcastic, naively clueless), that adds a lot of humor without the need for gimmicks or gags. Another favorite method of mine is to use secondary characters to add humorous banter. Children, quirky elderly characters, a teasing best friend, all of these can liven a scene and leave the reader grinning.
