During this project, our fashion design class transformed t-shirts found at, and donated by, the fabulous Ranger Quarter Store into vibrant, meaningful quilts. The girls learned so many valuable skills along the way.
The project began with an introduction to the sewing machine, where students learned machine parts and practiced threading the machine and bobbin. They learned how to properly cut t-shirts into uniform squares, ensuring consistent sizing for the quilt layout. With the pieces prepared, students stitched the squares together row by row, learning how to sew straight seams and careful alignment. They also learned how to attach the quilt backing using the ‘stitch in the ditch method’ and the hand tying method. They added bindings WRDWODQQL edges, using techniques like mitered corners.
They encountered several challenges throughout this project from machines jamming, threads breaking, squares not lining up, and bobbin threads tangling up into massive thread monsters! This project not only taught them the technical aspects of sew-et- ing but also emphasized patience, precision, and the creative potential of upcycling. This quilt project was a true labor of love.
