The public is invited to attend the annual Old Rip Oath Ceremony at the Eastland County Courthouse at 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 23. County Judge David Hullum will lead county employees and community members in the ceremonial oath honoring the legacy of “Old Rip,” the horned toad made famous for reportedly surviving 31 years sealed inside the courthouse cornerstone.
The oath, written by Eastland County Newspapers publisher H. V. O’Brien, commemorates one of Eastland’s most enduring local legends and celebrates the unique history surrounding the courthouse and community. The ceremony has become a cherished tradition that brings together county officials, employees, students, and residents each year.
