February Observance keeps Old Rip Legacy alive

The public was invited to the annual Old Rip Oath Ceremony on Monday, February 23, 2026 at Eastland County Courthouse. County Judge David Hullum led county employees and community members, who so desired, in the ceremonial oath honoring the horned toad “Old Rip’s” legacy; famous for reportedly surviving 31 years sealed inside the courthouse cornerstone.

The oath, written by Eastland County Newspapers publisher H. V. O’Brien and started together with Previous County Judge Scott Bailey, commemorates one of Eastland’s most enduring local legends and celebrates the unique history surrounding the courthouse and community. The ceremony has become a cherished tradition that brings together counstudents, and residents ty officials, employees,

each year.
