When was the last time you wrote an essay? High school? Something about The Great Gatsby and wealth in 1920s America? Or a comparison/contrast essay about Hamlet and Laertes in Shakespeare’s Hamlet? Those are fine, but school essays deal with topics someone else tells you to write about. They are a performance of knowledge.
