Fireworks at City Hall:

New Mayor chosen after Heated Debate

Fireworks at City Hall: New Mayor chosen after Heated Debate The City of Eastland, for the first time in more than two decades, has a new mayor as Michael J. Hackney was voted to the position of mayor on May 18 at the council’s regular meeting. His election didn’t come without plenty of And a few concerns. Prior to turning over the mayoral role to Hackney, longtime Eastland Mayor Larry Vernon pulled back the curtain to a darker undertone, saying the newly-appointed mayor was a “drug mule,” and that there were concerns that illegal communications were taking place between city council members.

“I don’t like it, but this is where we are,” said Vernon, noting the situation surrounding the city council bubbled over prior to the May 18 meeting when he received a phone call from a “recognized citizen” asking if he was behind a rumored push to remove Eastland City Manager Savannah Fortenberry and Eastland Police Chief Tim Pitts.
