Inis reminds me of another time and another team involving a famous coach from Cisco. His name was Weldon Bailey Chapman. He had winning teams at Cisco High for 9 years developing a reputation for the area as a football power and coaching the original Big Dam Loboes. He went to the Semi-Finals twice with the Loboes in 1924 and 1925, but could never win a State Championship. He later coached at Lubbock and his 1938 team was State Runner-Up, but the 1939 Team won the State Title. Coach Chapman died during the play-offs that last year and they buried him in Cisco and brought the State Title Trophy back and had a ceremony over his grave. That’s not all. The 1939 Lubbock team lost their first 3 games that year and tied the fourth game. Postscript: Cisco JV vs CC 21-0 at half W; 8th grade Cisco vs CC 38 - 0; 7th grade Cisco vs CC 26-0; Cisco College lost to Trinity Valley 3-37. 09/28/2023 12:00 AM
Owen Schauer
Cisco College Athlete Wins Championship at First College Rodeo
It was literally Owen Schauer’s first rodeo ~ in college. And as a member of Cisco College’s Rodeo Team, he brought home the championship in steer wrestling from the Eastern New Mexico University Rodeo in Portales, N.M., held Sept. 15-17. “I was a bit nervous coming in, my first rodeo as a college student,” Owen said, “but after I nodded my head, I was just back to business and do what I can.” Owen, who has had success as a high school rodeo athlete in Canada, said he chose Cisco College because “I really liked the rodeo grounds and the coaches that are here for our rodeo team.” The coaches he was referring to are Head Rodeo Coach Don Ed Eddleman and Assistant Rodeo Coach Chad Biesemeyer. “They do a lot to help out their athletes. It’s just really nice being a part of something like that.” Owen is from Halkirk, Alberta, Canada, “just a small town east of Red Deer.” He performed well in the LRA Finals (Lakeland Rodeo Association), an amateur organization in Alberta, winning two rounds in the tiedown roping, and was the season leader tiedown roper in that association. He connected to Cisco College “through mutual friends, and friends that have been to this school, and they convinced me to come. It didn’t take much convincing, but I came down in early Spring this year and looked, and I knew where I was going.” Owen has two older sisters who were involved in rodeoing, and he has followed in their footsteps. “Both my parents grew up on ranches but never (Cont. on pg. B3) really rodeoed,” he said. “My Dad didn’t start roping until he was 40. But my sisters, they started rodeoing before me, so I kind of grew up around that.” One sister is in university now, and the other has graduated. This was Owen’s first year to participate heavily in amateur high school rodeo. “I went to finals a week or so ago and it went pretty good, overall a pretty decent year, but hopefully, I’ll start pro-rodeoing next year, or maybe a year or two, I’m not sure yet. We’ll see how it goes.” He plans to get a degree and transfer to a university, or go back home and start ranching and rodeoing. He’s not 100 percent sure which yet. Meanwhile, he practices rodeoing at Cisco College, “as much as your body will let you. It’s a little bit every day, putting in the work to get there. Everybody else is working just as hard as you are or harder, so you’ve got to keep working hard at it. And hopefully it’s your turn to win.” He also has the daily responsibility of taking care of his horses. “They’re a huge part of a guy’s success,” he said. He brought three horses to Cisco: Otis, his steerwrestling horse; Ice Cube, his rope horse; and Leo, his young rope horse. Owen said he enjoys living in Cisco. “I like it a lot. The heat was a bit hard to adjust to the first week or so, but it’s been very nice lately. With the rains, it cooled off a lot. I’m liking it a lot. And good people. I’ve made some great friends so far, and I’ve really been enjoying it.” 09/28/2023 12:00 AM

Jacksboro 51, Cisco 0
The 2023 football season for the Cisco Loboes stands at 0 and 4 after Jacksboro won a lopsided victory 51-0 on Friday night, September the 15th in Jacksboro. Cisco’s starting tailback, Gus Hart, was out and its biggest lineman Talon Bruner was injured and did not play the 2nd half. Hart has a bruised leg bone, and I haven’t heard about Bruner, who looked from the stands as if his leg was hurt. We also lost a starting guard, and #25 Cody Gayle has a broken thumb. 09/21/2023 12:00 AM

Cisco loses to Breckenridge 41-6
Cisco loses to Breckenridge 41-6
Friday, September 8, 2023, at Chesley Field, the Breckenridge Buckaroos won the battle over the Cisco Loboes, as they kicked, carried, and threw the wobbly pigskin. The score was 41 to 6 in favor of Breckenridge. Cisco now is 0-3 for the year and Breckenridge is 1-2, but I might hasten to add the team is getting more polished and is coming together. The score is no indication of what transpired, and evidence of a really good football team is emerging from the ashes of Friday night. Cisco afforded Breckenridge 3 long scores the 1st half, and a 4th score was made with 7 seconds left in the half. Notice Breck ran the opening kickoff back, then Cisco marched the ball down to the Breck 25 yard line, and they stripped the ball from the Cisco runner and ran it 75 yards for a 2nd TD, and finally the 3rd Buck TD was set up by a pass interception; it was 21-0 in favor of Breckenridge at the end of the 1st Quarter and with 7 seconds left in the half it was 27 to 0. Meanwhile Cisco had marched the ball to the 5 yard line and the 11 yard line and came away with no score. In the 3rd Quarter the Loboes made it to the 5 yard line and the 14 yard line—before 2 interceptions foiled their efforts. To add insult to injury as the saying goes, Gus Hart. Cisco's starting tailback didn't play the 2nd half because of a knee injury. Breckenridge stripped the ball twice, once for a 75 yard TD and the other time near the goal line which prevented a Cisco score. So, taking everything into account, Cisco played a whale of a game, moving the ball freely from their spread formation, and utilizing the pass to great effectiveness. Yes, I witnessed the Lobo line playing their hearts out in the 100 degree heat for the 3rd week in a row and they were opening holes and keeping people out and stopping it up the middle. You guys are great. There are great things ahead. Brayden Rogers and Cole Thompson seemed to be all over the field. Remember and watch for these numbers this next game: #50 Jackson Wilks, #52 Cordell Harper, #53 Haden Rains, #55 Tyler Brown, #66 Talon Bruner, #73 Brant Slagle, #75 Tanner Thompson, and #88 Rezner Wilks. 09/14/2023 12:00 AM
