Mary Elizabeth Starr McCrary

Mary Elizabeth Starr Mc-Crary died peacefully on January 20, 2019 in Schertz, Texas after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.   Her beloved family was by her side.

She was born on May 22, 1944 in Marshall, Texas to Sophie Katherine Heinemann and James Milner Starr.

She is survived by her children;  son, Robert Don McCrary Jr.(Bob),  and her daughter, Katherine Starr McCrary (Starr) of San Antonio, Texas; her brother James Starr and his wife Georgia of Universal City, Texas; sisters Rose Starr Sherer of Cibolo,  Texas, and Ethel Starr Sloan and her husband Bill of Huntsville,  Texas;  and numerous nieces and nephews.  Preceding her in death were her parents and brother-in-law, Jim Sherer.

Mary lived most of her early life in Cisco, Texas.  While attending school there, she was a library assistant in both junior and senior high school.  As an avid reader, she enjoyed books throughout her life.  During high school, she was one of two Senior Girl Scouts in the Cisco area who was chosen to attend the National Girl Scout Round-Up in Colorado.

Mary worked as a bookkeeper for J.C. Penney after school and during summer breaks while in high school.  She graduated with honors as Salutatorian of her class of 1962.

After graduation she worked for S.W. Bell Telephone for many years in Cisco,  San Antonio, and Austin, Texas where she achieved the status of top sales person.  Her supervisors and coworkers said,

“Mary never met a stranger.”

During this time she married Robert Don McCrary of Cisco and had two children.  Living in San Antonio, she also worked for U.S.A.A., Montgomery Ward in their custom decorating department, and in sales at Portraits International.

Mary cherished her family and was a devoted mother and homemaker.

With a passion for gardening and nature, she collected rocks and stones used to design the landscapes of her homes.

As well as growing flowers, she planted her own vegetable gardens with seeds gathered from previous harvests.   She was an accomplished seamstress and designed many of her own clothes and accessories for her home.  Mary also enjoyed quilting and repurposing antique furniture.  She took joy in her pets and loved all animals.

Mary delighted in walking her dogs and talking to her cats.

She will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew her.

There will be no public service for Mary. However, her family will scatter her ashes in the places she loved the most.
