Sam Garland Miller, Sr.

Sam G. Miller, Sr., 84, of Houston passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family on Saturday, May 8, 2021. He was born November 8, 1936 in Coleman County, Texas to Roscoe and Florene Miller. Sam is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara H. Miller; sons, Sam G. Miller, Jr. & wife Jane, Steve B. Miller & wife Glynis, Marc T. Miller & wife Ida; grandchildren, Michael Miller, Samantha Miller, Chase Miller, Olivia Miller and Luke Miller; brother Victor Miller & wife Shirley as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Sam spent most of his youth in Eastland, Texas being raised alongside his 7 brothers and sisters working the Miller Dairy. It was there he met and married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Hightower. He attended The University of Texas where he was a member of the Longhorn Band.

Sam began his career in the Advertising industry as an account executive working with several Texas firms. He opened his own advertising agency Miller/ Johnston in 1978 and represented a number of great clients until his retirement in 2009. Sam was a longtime member of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church where he enjoyed being a member of the Prober Sunday School Class.

Sam always loved the outdoors, hiking and skiing in the Colorado mountains, biking, walking and even participating in the MS 150 ride from Houston to Austin. In his spare time, he enjoyed reading but most importantly he loved family, taking great pride and joy in following the numerous accomplishments of his 5 grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, May 22, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Dettling Funeral Home, 14094 Memorial Dr., Houston, TX 77079. Visit www. DettlingFuneral.com to leave words of condolence for the family.
