Thelma Hattie Schaefer

Thelma Hattie Whatley Schaefer passed from this life on June 12, 2021 at the age of 98.

She lived in Cisco most of her life and was married to Henry A. Schaefer. She was a homemaker and kept books for Schaefer’s Radio and TV.

She was active in several area churches including the Pentecostal Church in Cisco, Mountain Top Church, United Pentecostal Church of Cross Plains, the Pentecostal church of Eastland, and the United Pentecostal Church of Ranger. She loved and supported her pastors.

She had special talents in the domestic arts such as cooking, gardening, quilting, embroidery, and sewing clothes. She was an early riser and loved to spend time in prayer before her busy day began. At one time she had the C.B. handle of “morning Glory,” because she loved to spend time with her Lord in the mornings. She loved to invite friends and family to the house for meals, which were much appreciated. One of the young friends made the comment that she was the “best cook in the land.”

She was a devoted mother to her children Ruth and Phillip, and then greatly enjoyed Phil’s children Ben and Starla. Then she loved to hold their babies when they had children of their own.

Thelma Schaefer was preceded in death by her husband Henry A. Schaefer and son Phillip Schaefer; her parents Henry B. Whatley and Hattie Moore Whatley; Siblings Bessie Alma Whatley Frye, William Guy Whatley, Mary Alice Whatley Moore, Georgia Ethel Whatley, Mark James Whatley, Phoebe Ruth Whatley, Joel D. Whatley, Samuel H. Whatley, Silas Whatley, Laura Whatley Maynard, and Edgar Whatley.

Survivors include her daughter Ruth Schaefer Stewart of Cisco, daughter-in-love Susan Swindle Schaefer Potter of Cross Plains; granddaughter Starla Schaefer Neighbors (Husband Dustin) and children Trevor, Lena, Hannah, Theron, and Grace of Cross Plains; Grandson Benjamin Schaefer (wife Ruby) and children Kennedy, Lydia, and Henry of Watauga; Niece Nell Bode Jessup (husband Buddy Carol) of Cisco and their children Amanda, April Alyssa, and their children; Nephew Clifton Bode of Georgia and his children and grandchildren.

The funeral service was conducted by Chamber’s Funeral Home on West 7th Street in Cisco. The visitation was at Chamber’s Funeral Home from 5 - 7 on Monday, June 14th and the funeral was at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 15th at Chamber’s Funeral home. The burial was at Romney Cemetery, 10 miles of Cisco.)

Memorials may be made to the Cisco Senior Nutrition Program, or charity of choice.
