County Extension Agent Corner

Mesquite, cactus, weeds, and briar were here before us and will probably be here when we are gone in spite of our efforts. Somehow, we are going to have to learn what we can accept as a tolerable level of those plants. Everyone has a different goal in mind for their land and that goal is part of what decides the acceptable number of unwanted plants and how to remove the excess. There are as many options for control as there are plants and each has their pros and cons. Herbicides are among the most cost effective and therefore one of the most popular choices. Some herbicides are readily available for purchase by the general public while others are “state restricted” and can only be bought by individuals holding a state issued license from the Texas Dept. of Agriculture. By law, somewhere on the label, you will find the classification for the requirements for purchase. The required test helps verify knowledge of safe mixing, application, and storage for the herbicides.
