Eastland Memorial Hospital Talks Breast Cancer at Oct. 17 Seminar
EASTLAND, Texas (Oct. 5, 2018) – One in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Are you or someone you know at risk? As this dangerous disease continues to affect millions worldwide, Eastland Memorial Hospital is collaborating with Hendrick Breast Institute to host a free Lunch and Learn Seminar on Oct. 17, to share important information on the disease with the community.
Led by Melissa Boyd, RN, the program coordinator for the Hendrick Breast Institute, the Oct. 17 seminar will cover the latest statistics regarding breast cancer, common risks, and symptoms, as well as local screening and available treatment options.
“Mammograms and other forms of breast cancer screening are imperative to detecting the disease in its’ early stages,” Boyd explains. “Awareness is key and can save your life or the life of a loved one.”
Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that develops from breast tissue. Aside from early detection from screenings such as mammograms, the first noticeable symptom is typically a lump seen or felt around the breast.
The Texas Department of State Health Services estimates that approximately 33.6 percent of women in Texas over the age of 40 have not had a mammogram within the past two years. In 2018, the state estimates 3,143 women will die in Texas because of breast cancer.
The American Cancer Society recommends women between the ages of 40 and 44 should have the option to start screening with a mammogram every year. Women ages 45 to 54 should get a mammogram annually. Women 55 and older can switch to a mammogram every other year or choose to maintain an annual screening.
“At the upcoming seminar, we will cover everything our community needs to know about breast cancer,” Boyd adds. “Partnering with Eastland Memorial Hospital means you have powerful allies in the fight against breast cancer. More importantly, it means you have the local resources necessary to do so. That’s a luxury many rural communities do not have.”
To learn more about breast cancer and the importance of screening, you are encouraged to attend the free Lunch and Learn Seminar on Oct. 17 in the conference room at Eastland Memorial Hospital. The event will take place from noon until 1 p.m., and includes a free lunch.
The program is free to attend, but space is limited and expected to reach capacity. Interested individuals are encouraged to reserve their seat in advance by calling 254-631-5350.
