Property Owners Could See County Tax Increase

Eastland County Commissioners’ Court unanimously proposed to adopt a tax rate of .53 per $100 property value for the upcoming fiscal year of 2018 in a special meeting Monday. Last year’s rate was .50; the effective rate (rate needed to raise the same amount of property tax revenue as in 2017) .5242; roll back rate (highest rate county can adopt without seeking voter permission to increase property taxes) .5661.

The highest tax rate increase without holding an election is 8 percent. The Texas State Legislature is currently debating in special session lowering this rate to 5 percent in House Bill 4. The Senate approved a property tax restriction measure which would reduce the roll back rate to 4 percent. That would change the rollback rate for Eastland County to .5451. it is anticipated that the Legislature will approve this tax measure.
