Mystery Houses Near Eastland County-Callahan County Line
My uncle, Milton Dunaway, called my attention to the cellarlike stone structure on Cooper Creek in 1971. He had noticed it while drilling an oil well nearby. I immediately became curious about the age of the structure and who built it. One of the more interesting interviews I conducted at that time was with Mrs. Sam Jobe who had moved to a site near the structure in 1886 when she was a fourteenyear-old girl. She said, “No one knew who had built it then, and it looked old at that time (Interview, August 16, 1971).” Mrs. Jobe was 97. I find 50 years later that I still do not have all the answers about the rock house.
