Now that the worst of winter has hopefully passed, many are turning their attention to going back out in their yards again. Most know fall and winter is the best time to plant trees and shrubs. The problem is where do you get them that time of year? Late winter or early spring works just about as well and you start seeing them in the nursery about now. Fruit trees, and especially peaches, are always very popular in Texas. Before you go get some fruit trees, make sure you have a place to plant them where they can grow to their potential and bear fruit. Be brutally honest about the space, amount of sunlight, and soil type now to save headache and heartache later. Fruit trees require less space than something like oaks or pecan, so they fit well into smaller areas. Most fruit trees need full sun all day so shade from buildings or larger trees often interfere with production in lawns. Nearly all fruit trees require soil that has good internal drainage, meaning they will not do well in heavy clay soil. If your spot meets those 3 basic requirements, it’s time to plant some fruit trees.
