The County Agent’s Corner

I hope you got some rest this winter because it’s about over (I hope!) and time to go back to work in the yards and gardens. By now we should be finishing up planting and pruning fruit trees and any major pruning on established shade trees and shrubs. Several of the gardeners I have talked to lately are planning to start tomatoes and peppers inside within the next week or so to get a jump on their neighbor’s. If you have not tested your soil within the last 2 or 3 years, you might want to this year. Fertilizer prices are directly tied to oil and gas prices which are increasing daily. With the price increase, you want the most bang for the buck you can get and that starts by knowing what your soil actually needs based on soil test results. One more thing to start working on when weather permits, is getting mowers, weed eaters, etc. serviced and ready to go before you need them for the weekend chores coming up.
