We had our Eastland County Pecan Show last week and as to be expected, entries were down from last year. Like many other things this year, things didn’t go very good for pecans either. A late freeze this spring and another early one this fall didn’t help. We are about average on total rainfall for the year, but it didn’t come at the best of times for the pecan trees. The quality of pecans we did have was pretty good in spite of the year though. DeMarquis Gordon brought us 2 entries that pretty much just ran away with the show. He won the Nacono and Pawnee classes hands down. By the end of the contest, he had won Grand Champion with his Nacono and Reserve Champion with his Pawnee too! Our County Courthouse always has entries from the lawn gathered by Donnie Gray in the contest and this year they won the Burkett and Western classes. Justices of the Peace Jon Glenn and Jessie Speer got in on the action this year too. Jon brought in the winning Native and Jessie won the Cheyenne class. Congratulations to all of these County Show winners who have advanced to the Central Region Pecan Show to be held Jan. 13 and I’ll let you know how they do there.
